Individual AI Value Migration Assessment
A practical methodology for understanding where value is moving in your work, career and economic life, and how to position yourself for what comes next.
Version 1.0 — September 2026
When AI makes part of your capability easier, cheaper or more widely available, the strategic task is to identify where value is moving and reposition yourself to capture it.
The question
Artificial intelligence is changing more than the way people work. It is changing the economics of capability itself: what takes time, what requires specialist expertise, what becomes inexpensive, what becomes widely accessible and, ultimately, what individuals and organizations are willing to pay for.
Much of the public conversation understandably centers on whether AI will eliminate particular jobs. But jobs are rarely single activities. They are combinations of knowledge, judgment, relationships, responsibilities and tasks. AI may make some of those activities dramatically easier without making the profession itself irrelevant.
The more useful question, therefore, is not simply whether AI can perform part of your work. It is what happens to your economic value when capabilities that were once difficult or expensive to access become available to almost everyone.
The Individual AI Value Migration Assessment is designed to help people examine that shift systematically. It provides a practical way to identify which parts of their current value are becoming more abundant, where new forms of scarcity may be emerging, how AI can create leverage, which human capabilities deserve deeper investment, and how greater productive capacity might ultimately be converted into value that the individual can capture and compound.
How the framework works
The Individual AI Value Migration Assessment is an applied extension of the AI Value Migration Framework, which examines how economic value shifts when technology makes previously scarce capabilities increasingly accessible.
The underlying framework describes a recurring progression:
Scarce Expertise → Democratization → Self-Sufficiency → New Scarcity
A capability that once required specialist knowledge may become widely available. Work that previously took hours may take minutes. Activities that once required a team may increasingly be performed by one person using intelligent tools. In each case, the economic consequence is not necessarily the disappearance of value; rather, value can migrate toward whatever remains difficult, differentiated or scarce.
The assessment translates that broader idea into a structured process for examining an individual's own work, profession, business activities and economic position. The framework explains the phenomenon; the methodology provides a repeatable way to investigate it; the assessment applies that methodology to an individual's circumstances; and the action process turns those insights into decisions about what to change, strengthen or build.
It is therefore best understood as a strategic self-assessment, rather than a test of AI knowledge or an attempt to predict precisely what will happen to a particular job.
Its central question is simple: Where did the value move?
How value migrates
Abundance
What is becoming easier to replicate? Begin with the work you already do and consider which parts of your knowledge, output or capability are becoming faster, cheaper, easier or more widely accessible because of AI. This may include first drafts, routine reports, research summaries, scheduling, basic analysis, standard communications, document preparation, simple design, administrative work or increasingly some forms of technical work. The purpose is not to conclude that your experience has suddenly become worthless. It is to identify which parts of that experience may no longer command the same scarcity premium they once did. A more useful question than asking whether AI can do your job is to ask: Which part of what I currently get paid for is becoming easier for everyone else to do?
Scarcity
What is becoming more valuable? When one capability becomes abundant, another may become relatively harder to find and therefore more valuable. Depending on the profession, new scarcity may emerge around judgment, trust, accountability, leadership, reputation, relationships, negotiation, creativity, strategic thinking, contextual understanding, original insight, distribution or deep domain expertise. If AI makes routine financial analysis easier, for example, value may migrate toward trusted interpretation, complex judgment and advisory capability. If competent writing becomes inexpensive, value may move toward original thinking, reporting, credibility, audience and distinctive perspective. If basic software production becomes increasingly automated, value may move toward problem definition, systems thinking, architecture and understanding what should be built in the first place. The important discipline is not simply to identify what technology is making cheaper, but to ask what becomes more valuable because of that change.
Leverage
What should I stop doing manually? Once you understand what AI is making easier, the next question is how to use that change deliberately. Many people continue to spend valuable human time on activities that technology can now perform, accelerate or substantially assist with. These may include repetitive research, first drafts, document organization, meeting summaries, routine communications, scheduling, formatting or basic analysis. The objective is not to automate everything. It is to move your time toward the work in which judgment, creativity, relationships, experience and accountability create greater value. AI becomes most useful when it functions as leverage rather than merely another tool. Do not compete with AI at the things AI is making cheap. Use AI there.
Where new scarcity emerges
Value Is Dynamic
Professional value is not permanently attached to a task, qualification or area of expertise. As technology changes the cost and accessibility of capability, the economic value attached to different parts of a profession can change with it. The ability to recognize those shifts early can therefore become a strategic advantage.
Productivity Is Not Prosperity
AI can make someone dramatically more productive without making that person economically better off. The important question is not only whether more value is being created, but who captures the benefit of that increased productivity. An employer, customer, competitor, platform or market may capture much of the gain unless the individual has a way to participate in the value being created.
Human Capability Becomes Strategic
The widespread availability of AI does not automatically reduce the importance of human capability. In many situations, it changes which human capabilities matter most. Judgment, trust, leadership, accountability, relationships, creativity and deep contextual understanding may become more strategically important precisely because routine capability becomes more abundant.
Ownership Changes the Economics
Productivity can increase output, but value capture determines who benefits from that output. Ownership can make some of that benefit durable. Income is one form of value capture, but value may also be captured through equity, intellectual property, business value, recurring revenue, reputation, investments, audience, customer relationships or other assets. This leads to the broader economic progression: Productivity → Value Capture → Wealth
Repositioning Is Continuous
Value migration is not a one-time event. AI capabilities will continue to improve, industries will adjust, customer expectations will change and new forms of scarcity will emerge. The assessment should therefore be revisited periodically rather than treated as a one-off exercise. A durable question to keep asking is: Where is value moving, and am I moving with it?
Practical application
The Individual AI Value Migration Assessment is designed to move from reflection to action.
The five dimensions: Abundance, Scarcity, Leverage, Human Advantage and Ownership, together form an individual's Value Migration Map. The purpose of the map is to help answer three connected questions: where value is leaving, where it appears to be moving, and how the individual should reposition in response.
The assessment then converts those insights into three practical time horizons.
Next 30 Days
Identify one activity that you can stop doing manually, automate or significantly accelerate. The objective is not dramatic transformation; it is to begin creating leverage and freeing time for work that carries greater value.
Next 12 Months
Identify one capability you should deliberately strengthen because it is becoming more valuable. This might involve judgment, professional expertise, communication, leadership, strategic thinking, relationship-building, reputation or another capability that moves you toward emerging scarcity rather than declining abundance.
Next 3–5 Years
Identify something you can build, own or establish that may compound your economic value. That could be a business, investment position, product, intellectual property, audience, customer base, professional specialty, recurring revenue, portfolio, proprietary knowledge or reputation.
The economic logic underlying these three horizons is:
Productivity → Value Capture → Wealth
AI can increase productive capacity, but productive capacity alone does not determine who benefits. Value capture describes the process through which some of that additional value becomes yours through income, ownership, intellectual property, business value, equity, reputation, recurring revenue or other economic benefits. Wealth begins when some of that captured value is converted into assets, ownership or other forms of value that can persist or compound over time.
The goal, therefore, is not simply to use AI to work faster. It is to understand how greater capability can improve your economic position.
